General Motors, for example, has 15 pounds (6.8 kilograms) of magnesium molded parts in its Polaris V-8 engine, which it installed on Cadillac vehicles. The company produced 25,000 to 30,000 of these vehicles annually in the mid-1990s and needed magnesium for that alone. Demand from America's General Motors, which churn out more than 9m vehicles a year, and Japan's Toyota, which makes as many as GM, is enough to excite magnesium producers.
